Hey! Since you already know my name,
allow me to share some other cool information about myself.

I’m all about tinkering and creating unique solutions for both the digital and print world. I'm really interested in the relationship between digital and print combined. One of my favourite ways to design is by bringing something tactile and hand-made into a digital context, like using a watercolour sketch as a background or a title frame. Handcrafted designs give me more room to experiment, while digitizing it allows me to utilize fundamentals, like layout, colour, and texture, at a much faster pace.

In my personal practice, I love pushing the boundaries of aesthetics, which helps build on my foundational knowledge and expand on my creativity. That experience bleeds into my professional projects where typography, content, and clear messaging are my focus.

I've always been a designer at heart, and knew so at a young age. In my life, I've overcome many obstacles to achieve my dream, and I'm so glad to be working at something I love so much.

When I'm not creating in my office, I'm creating in the kitchen. I love food and nutrition, and experimenting with new recipes. I also enjoy playing boardgames with my friends, reading comics and spending time with my cat, Adam West.

I live my life
like a video game.

Hey, my name is Charlie and I'm an independent graphic designer
specializing in creating online experiences
and makin' things move.

Canadian Pacific Railway

I worked with spark* advocacy and Canadian Pacific Railway on this unique campaign.

Canada’s existence as a nation depended on the construction of rail lines to link BC to eastern Canada. Following the lead of the 1967 Confederation Train, it is fitting that CP’s Community Train Tour should traverse the country to remind Canadians of this historic fact, and how the railway has connected Canada and Canadians for 135 years.

CP ran the ‘Spirit of Tomorrow’ train from Vancouver, BC to Ottawa, ON between July 28th and August 20th 2017, making 11 other stops in communities along the way. Each stop featured CP’s unique heritage cars and diesel locomotive, a free concert by Dean Brody with an opening First Nations act, and free activities on the ground.

Millie's Pierogi

While working at Pointer Creative I was lucky enough to help redesign this online family-owned pierogi shop. Below are a few of the earlier page mockups, before the design was massaged to be more in line with the client's goal.

Air Canada Pilots Association

An awareness campaign that I worked on with spark* advocacy and the Air Canada Pilots Association.

Canadian airline rules around pilot Flight and Duty Time (FDT) vary. Under the status quo, Canada lags behind the rest of the world. Almost every other jurisdiction has implemented regulations to comply with science-based rules established by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The Safer Skies campaign advocates for the federal government to improve pilot fatigue regulations. To learn more, checkout saferskies.ca.

The Ottawa Hospital Fundraiser

The Ottawa Hospital delivers roughly 6,000 babies a year. Of that number, more than 800 end up in the NICU.

Michael Potter, Ottawa’s well-known philanthropist and high-tech icon, hosted a memorable fundraiser for The Ottawa Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the General Hospital.

I worked with spark* advocacy to create a brand with event collateral for The Twinkle Twinkle Future Stars Gala. The event raised over $3-million, with more than 200 guests present. The evening’s entertainment included acts from Serena Ryder, Alan Doyle, and Randy Bachman, and This Hour Has 22 Minutes comedian and writer Mark Critch.

Mining Association of Canada

The Mining Association of Canada is the voice of the mining industry in Canada. It promotes the industry by working with stakeholders on policy issues and educating Canadians on the value that mining brings to our economy. To help achieve this mandate, spark* advocacy and I launched an awareness campaign with MAC to target the political ecosystem audience, and tell a multifaceted story under the ‘Canadian Mining’ brand.

Wild Leaf

While working at Pointer Creative I was lucky enough to help design this beautiful online store. Once we had a clear design direction it was my responsability to put together the "Our Story" and "Promise" pages. I created several mockups in Sketch, and after receiving final approval they were built by the development team. I also designed a pop-up subscription window for the home page.

It’s important to keep your creative juices fresh. This can become a challenge when you're working on the same project for months at a time. This collection of personal projects help manage my work-life balance by combining my love for typography, photography, and learning new skills away from the screen.

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian novella written by Anthony Burgess in 1962, with the central conceit being about an aggressive new form of aversion therapy that is being used to reform criminals. Called the Ludovico method, it relies on a cocktail of drugs, a barrage of images, and classical music to elicit the desired Pavlovian responses from criminals.

For my cover, I created a script typeface out of modelling clay that resembles brain mass, with bits of wire and toothpicks embedded. This was meant to invoke the Ludovico method scenes, where toothpicks were used to keep Alex’s eyes open, and the wires of the machines were hooked into his body.
